Border Print On The Bias

Working on the bias, I created a new original draped dress pattern. My studies in both flat pattern and draping design come together as I create new patterns.

Last summer I studied with @kennethdking in one of his Sit and Sew sessions. I arrived to his studio with sketch in hand. He said sure we can do this, and he helped me get the sketch to pattern. He also suggested we sample-sew the dress working in 1/2 scale. Because the original pattern took at least seven yards of fabric, working 1/2 scale was the ticket. A great process to learn for original designs. I used the top/bodice from that cape/dress for this new bias cut dress.

The book ‘Sway:Unraveling the Unconscious Bias’ by Pragya Agarwal, has inspired me to drape more and more on the bias. Both in life and in the sewing room, bias can be tricky, I hope to learn both.

The fabric is a beautiful, creamy cotton. It was a pleasure to work with. I found this at @fabricmart a while ago.
