About Face

I often use my clothing to communicate who I am, where I’ve been, and where I am going.  I am not going to be being silent. Instead I am doing the work, educating myself on how I can bring voice thru my art to Black Lives Matter. It is more than posting one black square on IG.

I recently read the book by Daniel R. Day, “Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem.” This t-shirt was inspiration from Day’s book. I learned about life as a black person growing up in Harlem. Dapper Dan is a brilliant tailor, creating bespoke couture. Learning about what it took for him to educate himself was a feat like no other. Highly recommended read.

T-shirts started to become popular as a form of communicating in the early 60’s. This piece is up-cycled, also bringing awareness to our landfills.  Here I have used four t-shirts from my closet to collage into another type of t-shirt. To get a curve at the hem, I simply turned one of the t-shirts upside down, using the neck edge.
